MacTrak And The Art Of Catching A Laptop Thief

by Justin on November 12, 2008

Oregon-based GadgetTrak has just released MacTrak, an anti-theft device for laptops running on Mac OS X.  According to FBI statistics, 10% of laptops are stolen within a year of purchase.  If you’re in that 10% and you have MacTrak installed on your laptop, you’ll be able to remotely enable the tracking software.  Using Wi-Fi positioning technology from Skyhook Wireless, MacTrak detects the perpetrator’s location once the laptop connects to the internet.  And it takes the art of tracking further yet.

Using the laptops iSight camera, it also takes a picture of the likely thief then uploads the position, network information, and photograph to Flickr.  It also sends you an email with the same information.  And should the thief be of the ultra-mobile kind, MacTrak will continue to track the laptops position as long as you have the software enabled.

You can purchase MacTrak for $59.95 from GadgetTrak and the license is transferable.  The company also provides similar tracking software for Windows OS, portable media players, and a variety of mobile devices including the iPhone, Blackberry, and handsets running on Windows Mobile.
