mapecos MapEcos puts toxic companies on Google Maps

There are plenty of great location-based real estate platforms and applications on the web.  Some of them that immediately come to mind include Trulia, Zillow, Redfin, Roost and Smarter Agent.  But there are factors that play into moving situations that go far beyond price and location.  Like pollution for instance.

A great Google Maps mashup from MapEcos is there to help you with this.  It cross-references EPA Toxic Release Inventory data with location.  Pins on the map signify businesses in a given location, and when clicked offer up all kinds of information including detailed toxic chemical emission information for each business.  To make things a little easier for you, the pins are color-coded: red pins signify highly toxic facilities, purple pins signify moderate levels and blue pins signify facilities with low emission levels.

Even if you’re not moving any time soon, MapEcos is worthing checking out.  It’s quite revealing, not to mention disturbing.
