MapQuest: High Gas Prices Are Changing Lives (Read Stating The Obvious)

MapQuest, one of the leading providers of maps on the web, has collaborated with DMS Research to survey 1001 adult Americans regarding the effect high gas prices have had on the average lifestyle.  Another one of those surveys that state the obvious, the MapQuest project found that a full 94% of consumers have made lifestyle changes thanks to the price of gas.

Key findings?

  • 57% plans driving routes more carefully
  • 24% are walking or biking more
  • 31% only partially fill their gas tanks
  • 82% make a conscious effort to drive less
  • 66% have altered vacation plans
  • 34% have canceled vacations
  • 37% of vacationers take trips closer to home
  • 80% are forgoing previously day-to-day activities
  • 62% dine out less
  • 19% have given up heating or air conditioning
  • 18% now only pay minimum balances on credit cards
  • 10% are stopping or cutting back on medications
  • 50% won’t take road trips over 100 miles
  • 24% use the internet to search for cheaper gas prices
  • 50% will use the internet to determine the difference between the costs of flying and driving for their next trip
  • 58% are more worried about the price of gas vs. air fare when planning a trip
  • 78% believe gas prices should receive governmental controls
  • 27% blame oil companies for this whole mess
