Wow, the new Mercedes-Benz SPLITVIEW technology looks damn cool, if a little dangerous. The technology, which will be available in the company’s S-class models come summer 2009, lets the driver view navigational instructions while the passenger sits back and enjoys a DVD or listens to music. Don’t understand? No problem, neither do I. But apparently the SPLITVIEW technology developed in collaboration with Bosch, works like this:
“two different images (are shown) simultaneously by placing pixels adjacent to each other. A filter masking the display divides this mixed image in such a way that depending on the seating position, only the pixels making up one or the other image can be seen. As a result, the driver and front passenger can view different programmes on the same screen at the same time”
Apparently the passenger also has a remote control and earphones so as not to distract the driver. Sure, but the 8-inch TFT-LCD color display sounds enticing. Though I’m not so sure about the impending death of those who use such a strange and alien technology.
