What if you could choose the functionality your GPS device has on a day-to-day basis?  Some of you might find that a handy feature in itself-although we’re not entirely sure why.  A patent filing by Microsoft seems to suggest the company might be working on developing a modular GPS device a la Bug Labs.

The device would feature a base navigation device, with a bunch of connection ports on the side that would allow the attachment of extra-functional module units.  By extra-functional we mean that each module serves a specific function-digital camera, wireless internet, phone, modem, SD card reader, etc.

Deemed a ‘physically connected package’ by Microsoft, the modular GPS unit is intended to be designed to maximize compactibility and portability for any given feature set.  Kind of like the ultimate handheld, but we ask: wouldn’t it be easy to lose pieces?
