Nokia Buys Plazes Location Aware Web App

The big news today is Nokia’s intention to purchase LBS web app Plazes, which will provide the handset maker with social mapping for its new web portal Ovi.  Plazes has been around for a while now and is more or less a service that lets you locate your friends and plan and share social activities.  How much Nokia paid for Plazes is undisclosed, and the company says the acquisition if part of their strategy to move to the web.  Undoubtedly it’s a bit of a defensive move too, as we all know the 3G iPhone’s GPS capabilities and its open SDK mean tons of new location-aware apps and services will flood the market in the next year or two.

Now we just have to wait until August or so to see if Nokia’s $8.1 billion offer for NAVTEQ will be approved by the European Commission.  Nokia says in the next year there’ll be million of dollars in other acquisitions as well as they expand their internet services business.
