PCMag got a chance to chat with reps from Sprint and Palm after the big announcement at CES and came up with some previously unknown information. Some of the new insights:
- the price of the Palm Pre hasn’t been decided but Sprint data plans will be similar to the Samsung Instinct
- other US carriers will get the Pre between 3 and 6 months after Sprint
- a GSM/UMTS version will be announced in mid-February for Europe and Asia
- there will be other Pre form factors
- the Pre won’t initially run Palm OS apps unless a third-party writes an emulator
- Palm will have a new app store that looks similar to Apple’s. The new operating system explains why the company chose to roll out a third-party app store for Palm OS last year.
- the SDK will be called Mojo which will include Javascript API’s for the internal hardware
- like Apple’s Safari browser, webOS is based on WebKit
