UK-based Acrossair is launching an augmented reality iPhone 3GS application called Nearest Subway on Monday in New York and San Francisco.
The application overlays directions to the nearest subway station over the iPhone’s video feed. Though Apple doesn’t yet offer an application programming interface (API) to utilize live video in application, Acrossair managed to build the application by using live video as a background.
The company’s spokesperson Chetan Damani told Venturebeat that Nearest Subway will launch in other large cities when the iPhone 3GS user base is large enough to create a demand.
