Remember the big furor caused by the Iraqi Army at the inception of the Iraq War in 2003. The Iraqis used Russian-made GPS jamming devices to seriously muck up the US military’s guided weapons systems, and now North Korea is apparently exporting their own brand of GPS jammer into a bunch of Middle Eastern countries including Iran and Syria.
This was apparently discovered by South Korean intelligence who have revealed that the North Korean GPS jammer is a copy of a Russian-made device. Well, well. The North Koreans are apparently offering their jammer at a better price than the Russians, probably pissing them off a little. But that’s not the real issue here. The real issue is the threat this could pose to South Korea and its allies if a war happened to break out with North Korea. The South is said to be working on a counter-solution, much needed because by 2012 they’ll have purchased 900 Joint Direct Attack Munition GPS-based systems currently used by the US to guide bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan.
