Just because you may not be able to drive and fiddle with your GPS in Jersey doesn’t mean you can’t drive and watch a movie simultaneously in Japan. Pioneer has developed a prototype system to help drivers do the latter called the Network AV Playback System for Mobile. Using Community WiMAX, provided by cable TV and mobile WiMAX operators, the system enables users to stream videos and music stored on a home media server to their in-car navigation device. Currently, Pioneer’s Air Navi GPS systems can communicate with each other over mobile networks, but as fourth generation WiMAX networks become ubiquitous, the company hopes to offer card devices that can play mobile network media.
