Points of interest: news bits flowing from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

Universal cellphone charging standard: the GSMA announced a new mobile phone charging standard at MWC that could see all phones compatible with a universal charger by 2012.  The standard, which relies on micro USB, has already been endorsed by 17 companies and is apparently 3 times as efficient as current chargers.

Yahoo packs mobile services into one, neat package: Yahoo has decided to consolidate its mobile services into Yahoo Mobile which will include Yahoo Maps, OneSearch and a variety of other services available across smartphones and feature phones alike.  The service will be available in the second quarter.

Nokia, Qualcomm cozy up for North American 3G handsets: despite years of bad blood between Nokia and Qualcomm, the two companies have decided to bury the hatchet and partner to create chipsets for North American 3G handsets.  This is great for Qualcomm as it taps into the world’s biggest handset manufacturer and also seems to confirm Nokia is serious about making inroads into markets where it has traditionally struggled.  The first handsets are expected in mid-2010.

Android Market allows for app trials: in a move that will infuriate iPhone app fans, the Android Market has updated its return policy to allow for a 24 hour trial app run.  The only possible issue is that refunds are between you and the developer, so prepare for the fights.  Also interesting is that once an app has been purchased, it can be reinstalled over and over.

Toshiba, Fujitsu reach provisional HDD purchase agreement: Toshiba has reached a provisional agreement with Fujitsu to acquire it hard disk drive business.  While the financial terms of the deal were undisclosed, previous reports pegged the value at roughly $450 million.

Acer has 2 Android phones on the way: reports from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona peg Acer has having 2 Android smartphones planned for release later in 2009.
