Project Niu is a K-12 Google Maps project currently being implemented into Hawaii’s science curriculum.
The project uses Google Maps to track, via GPS, the location of four bottles set adrift in the Pacific Ocean. The purpose of the project is to help students understand the results of ocean pollution, as the bottles follow a similar path as other marine debris introduced by inconsiderate people.
The Project Niu website includes tools to help students measure distances, project paths, and estimate the destination of the floating bottles. The bottles themselves are also collecting data such as temperature, wave height, and humidity, all available on the website as well. Check out the demo video below.
