LBS patent applications are a dime a dozen right now. The latest comes from chipmaker Qualcomm as the company has recently filed a patent application for a location-aware module that can be swapped between different cellphones. The module, which seems to be similar to a SIM card, would be capable of storing personal information and utilize stored location information to perform various actions such as delivering personalized mobile coupons.
Qualcomm has a variety of GPS chips which would likely compose part of the hardware concoction making up the chip and software apps could be stored on the module or just on the handset itself. While Qualcomm states in the application that the module would be a great help in locating a lost handset, the primary focus of the module seems to be monetizing software apps and location via coupons and other deals.
