I’ve been speculating for some time now that the so-called iPhone nano could be a stripped down version dedicated for emerging markets. It appears that this could be true.
According to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Daniel Amir, Apple is gearing up to produce a low-end 3G iPhone version and a higher-end 32 GB flash memory version. In a research report released today citing information from channel partners, Amir states that the low-end version may only be available in Brazil, Russia, India and China, while the 32 GB iPhone will ship in North America and Europe.
The high-end version is also reported to have an improved camera from the current version. The low-end 3G version may also explain why it’s taking Apple so long to come to an official carrier agreement with China Unicom. Both could be announced as early as June.
Apple’s recent 3.0 firmware update contained strings that indicate Apple is planning to release as many as six new iPhone models in the near future.
