Samsung announces solar-powered Blue Earth touchscreen phone

Samsung has unveiled the world’s first solar-powered touchscreen mobile phone dubbed Blue Earth.

The handset charges through a solar panel embedded in the phone’s backside, and according to the company, generates enough power to make a call anytime.  The eco-friendly phone is designed to “symbolize a flat and well-rounded shiny pebble”–what marketer came up with that!?–and is made from PCM, a recycled plastic derived from water bottles.  Blue Earth doesn’t use brominated flame retardants, beryllium or phthalate in its hardware, and its user interface is designed to draw attention to the environment.

An eco-mode allows the user to adjust screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth to conserve energy according to the situation, and an eco-walk function counts footsteps with an embedded pedometer and calculates the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to driving a car.  Samsung Blue Earth is coming to the United Kingdom in the second half of 2009, according to Pocket-lint, but I’m sure we’ll probably find out a few more details during the Mobile World Congress.
