Samsung announced its first Android-based smartphone, the I7500, this morning in Seoul, Korea.  A member of the Android-supporting Open Handset Alliance, Samsung calls the I7500 handset “cutting-edge” and indeed it looks that way.  Take a look at some of these features:

  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA/5.76 HSUPA (900/1700/2100MHz)/EDGE/GPRS (850/900/1800/1900MHz)
  • Google Android operating system
  • 3.2-inch, 320 x 480 pixel HVGA AMOLED touchscreen
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with power LED
  • MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV video support
  • MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA, RA audio support
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0
  • 8 GB of internal memory/32 GB microSD support
  • Full HTML web browser with Google Mobile services including Google Maps
  • integrated GPS receiver
  • USB 2.0/microUSB/3.5 mm audio jack
  • 1500 mAh battery

The Samsung I7500 sports dimensions of 115 x 56 x 11.9 millimeters and like all Android handsets, has full access to the Android Market where third-party applications can be downloaded.  While Samsung hasn’t released pricing or carrier agreements, the Samsung I7500 will probably be available on several European carriers in June 2009.

Samsung said in February that it planned to release a European Android phone in June, as well as another pair of Android smartphones in the United States in the second half of 2009.
