There is no arguing that packing 1 TB of data into a solid-state drive is a technological feat. But imagine cramming 2 TB into an SD card. That’s 100 high definition movies, 60 hours of high definition recording, and roughly 17, 000 pictures.
It’s a little beyond cranial comprehension I think, but it’s about to become a reality. At CES, the SD Association debuted the SDXC specification–with XC standing for eXtended Capacity–providing 2 TB of storage, 104 MB/s read and write speeds with an eventual goal of moving both to 300 MB/s. All of this in the same SD interface you’re familiar with.
SDHC, embedded SD, and SDIO specifications will also benefit from the new read/write speeds.
SDXC uses Microsoft’s exFAT, a file system that increase compatibility with Flash media, to enable its large capacity and interoperability among different devices.
