Sniff: Social Networking Integrated Friend Finder Hits Facebook, Major US Wireless Carriers

Sniff Mobile Friend Finding Application

Sniff, which stands for “social networking integrated friend finder”, is a new mobile app from Useful Networks that incorporates the popular text message “Where r u?” into a location-based app that’ll allow you to track down your friends as long as they’ve also signed up to be sniffed.  In fact, if you happen to be lost you can even sniff yourself in order to regain your orientation.  It’ll initially be offered in the next few weeks through their website and also as a Facebook app, and will eventually make its debut with at least two major US wireless carriers.  Sniff is already fairly popular in Scandinavia where it has 180, 000 users and recently became available in the UK.  Using triangulation, your friend can be located by finding his or her cellphone location by finding its central point between the nearest three cellphone towers.  Then, for less than a dollar, Sniff will produce a rough address and map to help visualization your friend’s location.  Given the possible privacy implications of Sniff, users can make themselves invisible to choice sniffers and the company is working on a way to give fake locations to stalker-types and power-hungry employers attempting to see whether or not absent employees are out on the town having a grand ol’ time.
