Solara Remote Data Delivery Incorporated, located in my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada, has announced the Field Tracker 2100.  The rugged, 500 gram handheld is designed for use in harsh and remote environments, enabling real-time GPS tracking, 2-way text messaging anywhere on Earth, and a 2-way Emergency Alert notification system.

It incorporates an Iridium (as in the satellite constellation) Short Burst Data modem, which uses little energy, connects anywhere in the world, and can last for weeks depending on how the device is configured.  Also, the Emergency Alert system automatically transmits the nature and severity of a given emergency–a handy feature I’ve yet to see on any other device.

The Field Tracker 2100 is connected via a web-based client from which a team member can track multiple units on a map, send individual messages to multiple units, and the forwarding of text messages by email or automated telephone contact.

You can grab Solara’s Field Tracker 2100 from the company’s website for $999.99CDN plus a monthly text messaging subscription that runs from pay-as-you-go to $34.99 with a 2-year contract.
