There’s all kinds of biometric authentication technologies available these days from fingerprints to, um, iris prints. But the latest biometric technology has emerged out of Sony’s labs–finger vein authentication called “mofiria”.
Quick and accurate, mofiria uses a “unique method where a CMOS sensor diagonally captures scattered light inside the finger veins, making a plane layout possible.” With a plane layout, a mofiria module is small enough to fit inside a mobile phone. Furthermore, when the vein pattern in a finger is captured, the data is compressed to one-tenth of the original size, small enough to store in a cellphone’s memory.
Sony’s finger vein authentication technology is expected to be available with the 2009 fiscal year.
