Sony Ericsson struggled in the fourth quarter, posting a worse-than-expected loss of 187 million euros ($245 million) compared to a 373 million euro ($492 million) profit in 2007. That’s roughly double the loss analysts were expecting, and Sony Ericsson President Dick Komiyama predicts the market will continue to deteriorate in 2009. He expects that an ongoing restructuring will save the company 300 million euros ($397 million) this year.
Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson believes the global handset market will shrink in 2009 with the average selling price declining. The company will refocus its efforts on high-end handsets, emphasizing profitability over market share, and with a commitment to Android, the royalty-free operating system should increase profit margins on high-end handsets.
