Sony LocationPorter: Real-time, location-based video transfer to anywhere in the world

sony locationporter 0032 Sony LocationPorter: Real time, location based video transfer to anywhere in the world

Sony’s LocationPorter is a technology that could revolutionize news reporting and family get-togethers.  From a news perspective, it enables real-time video to be instantly transmitted nearly anywhere.  For family dinners, it means you can get someone to set up a video camera and then promptly bail.  No, I’m just kidding.  But it a technology with all kinds of interesting ramifications.

The LocationPorter requires an internet connection via 3G, LAN, or whatever else might work.  Then it just connects to your camcorder, and voila.  Real-time video to anywhere there is another internet-connected Sony LocationPorter.  It won’t transmit high-def, but it supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC-encoded video streams.

Over a 3G connection, the LocationPorter will output video at 5 to 15 frames per second/352 x 240 resolution/64 to 160 kbps; with two 3g connections it’ll output the same quality video at 64 kbps to 320 kbps; and with a local area network connection, the LocationPorter will output the same resolution at 30 frames per second/1024 kbps at maximum.

There isn’t any information regarding release dates, prices, or release locations, but check out the demonstration video below and prepare to drool until we know more.
