It’s rather strange that Sprint is testing 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) equipment given its public commitment to competing 4G standard WiMAX, and its 51 percent stake in Clearwire which is taking care of the WiMAX launch.
According to GigaOM, Sprint wouldn’t confirm or deny that this is true, though an email from Sprint spokesman John Polivka to the blog stated “we are always collecting competitive information about various technologies/equipment to monitor and assess the competitive landscape and any potential impacts to Sprint’s plans.” Seems like a hint there. Like ‘we are testing LTE equipment, but not for the reasons you think’.
Whatever the case may be, AT&T and Verizon are beginning to make a lot of noise surrounding LTE and shifting public attention away from WiMAX. Is Sprint feeling the pressure?
