We had previously heard that Open Handset Alliance member Samsung was working on an Android-based handset for release in the second quarter of 2009. When we first heard about it, the company had hired on more staff to focus specifically on the phone as it was under pressure from Sprint and T-Mobile to get it done. Brighthand is reporting that is indeed the case and we should see a Samsung Android phone carried by both Sprint and T-Mobile later this year.
The handset is rumored to have a form factor similar to the Omnia and Instinct, with full touchscreen support and no keyboard. Given this is the second time we’ve heard of Samsung’s intentions, the phone will likely be released sometime this summer, though no pricing information is available at this time.
