Sun launches JavaFX Mobile for immersive, cross-compatible mobile applications

javafxapp Sun launches JavaFX Mobile for immersive, cross compatible mobile applicationsSun Microsystems has added another mobile development language to the growing industry mix.  Dubbed JavaFX Mobile, the platform leverages the features of Java ME while adding the ability for developers to tap into rich, immersive media.

The idea behind the new platform, according to Sun, is to not only provide new functionality for creating apps with slick interfaces, graphics, and effects, but also to remove fragmentation issues common to mobile Java.

In the past, Java’s rather large downside has been its incompatibility across devices.  But according to Sun’s Joshua Marinacci, JavaFX not only works cross-mobile, but even further, across desktop and browser.  That means that the same code you’d write for a desktop application should work just as well with a mobile phone.

The Java platform already has 6.5 million developers, so Sun has a huge chance to make something of this before mobile Java ends up swallowed by Apple, Symbian, Android, and other competing languages and operating systems.

Aside from developers, JavaFX has already garnered partner support from Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, Orange, Sprint, Cynergy, and MobiTV.

You can download the JavaFX 1.1 SDK now with a desktop emulator.
