Fouteen new companies joined the Symbian Foundation today, the non-profit organization dedicated to open-sourcing the Symbian mobile operating system.
The new members include Qualcomm, MySpace, HP, Atelier, Bank of America, Nanoradio, Omron Software, SanDisk, SESCA, the newly acquired SiRF Technology, Gemalto, Imagination Technologies, Mobica, and VirtualLogix.
With the new additions, the Symbian Foundation now has more supporters than the Android-pushing Open Handset Alliance. Nokia purchased the assets of the UK-based Symbian last year in order to contribute them to the Symbian Foundation. The open-source initiative plans to release its first software sometime this year and a full platform by June 2010. Nokia is also expected to be launching a Symbian application store at the Mobile World Congress.
