Google Maps Mix-Ups: Google Pinpoints A Russian Invasion Of Southern Georgia…As In The State

Who knew that mapping API’s could ensue worldwide panic?  Okay, maybe not worldwide, but a Google News story about a Russian invasion of Georgia (the country) was pinpointed on an accompanying Google Map as a Russian invasion of the America’s southern state.  According to Valleywag, a Yahoo Answers user actually hit the web to ask why the apparent invasion was so, umm, subtle in the Georgia state area.  Yes, that’s right, because it was happening in an entirely different part of the world.  Makes you wonder what kind of mass hysteria a machine language could actually cause.

RunKeeper: Track Your Running Distance On The iPhone

RunKeeper, an upcoming iPhone app developed by Jason Jacobs of FitnessKeeper, is a fitness tracker that utilizes Google Maps to track your running route via GPS, tally your overall distance, and then puts all of the compiled info into a database. Previous run stats can be pulled out of the database so you can compare runs and chart your fitness progression.

Jason Jacobs says that this demo RunKeeper is only the beginning of the functionality the app will offer. No word yet on an official release date.

2008 Tour de France Up Close And Personal On Google’s Street View

Tour de France fans can head over to Google’s Tour site and navigate the winding roads and steep mountain passes of famous route using Google Maps and Street View.  Moving your way through the route gives you a cyclist’s perspective right from ground level and is actually quite fascinating.  The only thing that really irritates me is that Google’s new privacy features including blurred faces and license plates are clearly on display.
