As more and more people are relying on mobile handsets for urban navigation, TeleAtlas finally realized it was time to take maps from the streets to the sidewalks. The company is rolling out Urban Maps, integrating the company’s 2D CityMaps to cover sidewalks and footpaths not found on typical PND’s. It also incorporates 2D Landmarks to provide the pedestrian with well-known visual waypoints to help with orientation, and can incorporate 3D City Maps, 3D Landmarks, CityGuide and aerial imagery to further enhance the navigational experience. TeleAtlas Urban Maps are available in major cities in 120 countries, and a prototype version with additional features is available in 23 cities in 11 European countries.
