This week’s top 10 posts at GPSObsessed (week 4 2009)

by Justin on February 1, 2009

It has been another action-packed week here at GPSObsessed.  The action was largely indicative of a great, global economic problem, filled with rough earnings calls and an increasing layoff count.  Especially within the mobile and semiconductor industries.

Heading into February, dedicated GPS companies like Garmin and TomTom will announce earnings for the previous quarter.  I think this year will be a shake-up year for the big PND companies.  As GPS-equipped mobile phones and other portable devices continue to take market share away from standalone GPS companies, this year will undoubtedly be a year of change.  So, here it is.  Your favorite posts of the fourth week of 2009.

And in the number 10 spot…

Acer’s 10-inch Aspire One costs $350, may come with hard drive and OS options: in North America, J&R has the Acer Aspire One 10-inch netbook up for preorder for $349.99.  I’m currently looking at my options.

GeoEye selling Obama inauguration satellite picture posters: want a picture of Obama’s Presidential inauguration taken from 423 miles in the air?  GeoEye, the company that took the incredible pictures is jumping on an opportunity to make some extra coin, and selling posters via its website.

Savant’s OnPar golf GPS will hopefully keep you on par: Savant’s OnPar golf GPS unit look more like an iPhone than a dedicated GPS unit, but despite its cool looks it’ll face some competition from Garmin’s Approach G5 golf GPS.

10-inch Acer Aspire One details popping up all over the globe with conflicting specs: the number of countries debuting the 10-inch Aspire One netbook with slightly different specs, price tags, and even model numbers is making it really, really tough to keep track of of this Acer.

One Observatory Circle mysteriously reappears on Google Earth, Maps.  Must be time for change.: in all the time Dick Cheney served as vice president of the United States, his digs were mysteriously blurred into oblivion within any Google-based mapping platform.  While it was never confirmed that this was intentional, the fact that it cleared up the same day Cheney moved out and Biden moved in make you wonder…

New Palm Pre features emerge, Bell rumored to be Canada’s Palm Pre carrier: I don’t know of anyone who isn’t enthralled with Palm’s new Pre handset and webOS operating system.  Unannounced features continue to emerge and rumor has it that Bell will carry the Pre in Canada sometime around Sprint’s release date.  Which, unfortunately, is still unknown.

Clarion NX509 double-DIN GPS seen in the wild: no price or release date on this 7-inch GPS cum in-dash entertainment unit, but we have some pictures and tentative specifications.

Verizon Network Extender femtocell official for $249.99: not everyone is convinced this is such a good deal, but you have to admit the technology, which acts as a mini cellular tower within your home, is pretty darn cool.

Cops stumble upon a 2 acre marijuana field in Google Earth: this, my friends, is why gossip sites and other such stuff do so well on the internet.  We love this kind of stuff.

Google Street View van runs over a deer, maps it: turns out the majority of GPSObsessed fans are a little on the morbid side, including myself.  Yep, a Google employee out grabbing street imagery caught himself in the process of running over Bambi, and its aftermath.
