A battered economy provides opportunities for smart companies to enter new markets and catch up to competitors with innovative thinking. Maybe this is why TomTom has decided to enter the Argentinean market as of August 2009. The world’s number two GPS company will offer 3 GPS lines in Argentina: the high-end TomTom GO series, the mid-range TomTom XL series, and the entry-level TomTom ONE series.
All of the TomTom devices will have the same features as their brethren in other parts of the world with a few obvious changes. Namely, pre-loaded Tele Atlas maps of Argentina and Spanish voice commands.
Tele Atlas maps of Argentina cover 200, 000 kilometers of road network and have street-level coverage of 70 major cities. Because the road infrastructure is quickly changing in Argentina as its financial fortune improves, TomTom will rely heavily on its user-generated MapShare program to improve its map coverage. MapShare allows TomTom users to edit and add features to the company’s maps.
Distributed by Visuar, the trio of TomTom GPS lines will be sold by major Argentinean retailers including Walmart, Garbarino, Fravega, Carrefour and Falabela. As mentioned above, TomTom devices will be available in Argentina next month though prices have not yet been disclosed.
