TomTom has announced its iPhone car kit is finally available from the TomTom and Apple web stores today–but only in Europe. The twist-and-lock mount can be placed on the windshield or dashboard, includes an extra GPS receiver, speaker and microphone, and can playback iPhone tunes via the car stereo. The iPhone car kit, which also acts as a charger when supporting the iPhone, costs 99.99 euros and only supports the iPhone 3G and 3GS (and iPhone 3.0 OS or higher). European countries with availability include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and Switzerland. It should arrive in North America in the very near future.
There is quite of bit of doubt among the interwebs regarding the future success of the iPhone car kit. Not only because it’s expensive, working out to roughly US$150, but also because it doesn’t include the TomTom iPhone app which must be purchased separately. I have to agree that TomTom went way to far out of the ballpark with the pricing here. It’s no more economical than buying an iPhone and a separate TomTom PND. For alot of us that means there is no real incentive to buy. However, we can’t fault TomTom for attempting to make a move into mobile at a time when the traditional PND looks to be nearing the end of its product life cycle.
