Top 10 posts of the week at GPSObsessed (Week 1 2009)

In an effort to keep things interesting, my weekly wrap-ups will vary this year.  Some weeks it will be more or less an op-ed, and other weeks I’ll do a top 10 list of your favorite posts of the week.  That’s what we’ll do this week.  So here goes.  These are your favorite 10 posts between December 28, 2008 and January 3, 2009–in reverse order.

In the number 10 spot…

RemoteDroid lets you control Windows with your Android-based G1: maybe not the most productive hack, but definite something interesting to check out.

OQO Model 2+ coming to CES 2009.  With GPS?: the next generation netbook to the Model 02, it’s likely this Intel Atom-powered slice of computing heaven will have optional Garmin Mobile PC to get you to your destination.

Garmin’s nuvi 860 gets reviewed, best voice recognition-capable GPS device around: speaks for itself doesn’t it.

Points Of Interest: OpenMoko’s Android, 9 inch iPod, Hewlett’s Atom, Apple’s internet, paid Android apps, and Google Mobile suggestions: everyone loves the roundup posts.  Lots of good stuff in this one.

Smith v. The Abandoned Vessel: Treasure hunter claims to have found lost treasure using Google Maps: not sure if this dude is a nut,  but he’s currently in court trying to gain access to land on which is apparently billions in long forgotten gold and silver.

Apple patent reveals touchscreen compatible, cold weather gloves: there seems to be a lot of people that think this is a ridiculous idea.  But I can tell you, as a person living in Winnipeg, that it’s brilliant.  Ever tried removing your gloves in -40 degree weather to navigate around your iPhone or iPod Touch?

Android ported to ASUS’ Eee PC 1000H, likely coming to netbooks soon: I’ve advocated for a while now that I believe Android will be the reigning operating system in netbooks.  A couple of folks managed to port Android to an ASUS netbook this week in about four hours.

Is the iPod Touch responsible for app store sales spikes?: Mac Rumors was able to correlate the above average sales of the iPod Touch during the holidays to increased sales at Apple’s app store.  In this article, we discuss.

Embed maps in your iPhone app with Route-Me: the open source mapping library built using Objective C and supporting OpenStreetMap, Microsoft Live Earth, and CloudMade should make map-based iPhone apps quicker and easier to develop.

And in the top spot for the first week of 2009…

Don’t eat yellow snow, but download it to unlock your 3G iPhone: the long-awaited 3G iPhone unlock went live as promised December 31, but unfortunately many people across the globe had all kinds of problems with it.  So before you go ahead and give it a try–assuming you haven’t yet–just remember with 3G speeds and all kinds of 3rd party apps available, it might not as gratifying as unlocking the first generation iPhone.
