Toshiba is making a couple of updates to its first foray into the netbook market, the NB100.  The two new variants, the NB100HF and NB100H switch up the storage options offered by the NB100, the latter of which will be available in North America and Europe later this month.

The NB100HF has an 8.9-inch display and packs in a 64 GB solid-state drive, improving speed and lowering power consumption enough so the netbook can actually run for 5 hours off a single charge.  So far so good, but the NB100HF’s downfall could be its pre-installation of Windows Vista.  Definitely a sub-optimal netbook operating system.

The NB100H has the same 8.9-inch display but contains a 160 GB hard drive, offering more space but slower performance.  With the HDD, the NB100H also uses more energy so only offers up a 3.7 hour battery life which still is pretty reasonable.  This variant also comes with Windows XP, a smart choice here on the part of Toshiba.

Both devices sport a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor with 1 GB of RAM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a webcam.  Slated for release later this month in Japan, the NB100HF and NB100H will be priced the equivalent of $880 and $770 US, respectively.  The company didn’t state whether either netbook would be released outside of Japan in the future.
