It’s always a giant pissoff to get busted by a speed trap when you’re in a rush. Yes, they’re a good thing for public safety and all but why get caught if you don’t have too. Trapster is a mobile phone application that lets you pinpoint speed trap locations on a Google Maps interface or call a toll-free number to report it. Once a spot is located, other Trapster users in the area will be alerted via mobile phone if they’re coming up on the speed trap. While it’s obviously possible to game the system here, speed trap spots are deemed credible once an appropriate number of users have reported it and users themselves gain credibility by reporting actual speed traps. While the service does seem a little bit inconvenient (I mean who wants to fiddle around with their cellphone or call a number when moving by a trap), especially as most of us are too selfish to contribute the time and knowledge to make it successful, the idea behind it is a good one. Will it succeed in the long run? We’re betting no, but it is pretty cool nonetheless.
