The GPS industry is in the middle of a massive shakedown courtesy of mobile phone proliferation. But Japan’s NEC and Tanizawa seem to be ignoring this fact and heading down a different road altogether. The two companies have created the U-Met, also known as the Utility Helmet. The helmet is equipped with a GPS device, camera, and headset intended to enable communication with other personal over 3G cellular networks or LAN connections. The front part of the helmet which houses all the hardware is waterproof and can be removed in order to adjust certain connectivity-related settings. No pricing or availability dates have been announced for the U-Met, but anyone out there with one, please send us a picture!
