OpenTable, a provider of online reservation services, has announced the availability of an iPhone application today. Available from the iTunes app store, the OpenTable application was designed in collaboration with San Francisco-based social media company Context Optional, the same company that assisted OpenTable in developing its Facebook application.
The iPhone application functions similarly to the OpenTable website, but by utilizing the iPhone’s location features, is able provide real-time restaurant seating availability for diners in your area on the run. All’s you have to do is specify a date, time, and party size and you’re returned a list of available restaurants in list form or on a map. Then you can quickly book at the desired location from your iPhone, get directions, and even email the reservation details to your friends.
If you actually register as a user, you’ll have access to added functionality including the ability to see upcoming reservations, earn Dining Points and view your total point balance.
OpenTable is based in San Francisco, California and was launched in 1999. The service is available in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico and parts of Europe. They have over 8500 participating restaurants, have accepted reservations from over 80 million diners, and raised $48 million over three rounds of financing.
