As expected, Verizon Wireless completed its acquisition of Alltel from Atlantis Holdings LLC. Verizon paid $5.9 billion for the equity of Alltel, in the process picking up the latter’s $22.2 billion debt. According to a press release, Verizon’s network coverage will serve 290 million customers in the United States before conforming adjustments and after divestitures. Of course not all 290 million subscribe to Verizon. The transaction net the carrier 12.9 million new customers expanding its total user base to 83.7 million making the company the largest wireless provider in the United States.
