Verizon Wireless will be the largest telecommunications provider in the United States as of January 9, 2009. According to SEC filings, the merger between Verizon and Alltel will be completed on this date when Verizon will pick up Alltel’s 13 million customers. That will bring Verizon’s customer base to 83 million customers–ahead of AT&T’s 74.9 million, Sprint’s 50.5 million, and T-Mobile’s 32.1 million. Verizon will pay $5.9 billion for Alltel acquiring $22.2 billion in Alltel debt.
