Weekend project: Make your own GPS tracker

There are a whole pile of GPS trackers on the market right now.  In many cases though, they not only require the initial purchase price, but also a monthly subscription for network access.  Don’t want to fork out the cash?  If you have some time this weekend, why not make your own?

The Open GPS Tracker project has a complete run-down of how you can make your own.

The Open GPS Tracker is a small device which plugs into a $20 prepaid mobile phone to make a GPS tracker. The Tracker responds to text message commands, detects motion, and sends you its exact position, ready for Google Maps or your mapping software. The Tracker firmware is open source and user-customizable.

Sounds pretty cool.  All’s you need is a Tyco Electronics A1035D GPS module, Motorola C168i AT&T GoPhone prepaid mobile phone, and an Atmel ATTINY84-20PU AVR microcontroller.  It’ll even store GPS information when GSM network coverage isn’t available.
