Semiconductor manufacturer Intel hasn’t wasted anytime in streamlining its operations in order to filter out inventory glut resulting over the last quarter due to slowing demand. The company has announced it will be halting operations at 5 plants across the globe, leaving 5, 000 to 6, 000 employees in danger of layoff. The affected plants include:
- two assembly test plants in Penang, Malaysia will be closed
- one assembly test plant in Cavite, Philippines will be closed
- Fab 20, an older 200mm wafer production facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, will halt production
- D2, in Santa Clara, California, will close its wafer production operation
Intel’s 45nm and 32nm operations will not be affected and the company says it may offer some employees positions at other facilities.
