Orbicule, a company that provides location-aware theft tracking software for Mac OS X, has released Undercover 3. The software previously used the Mac notebook’s iSight camera to take a picture of the thief and transmit it to a server that connects online. It also simulated a hardware failure, sometimes prompting dumber thieves to take the notebook in for repair. With the new release, Orbicule has licensed Wi-Fi positioning technology from Skyhook Wireless in order to accurately locate the position of the stolen laptop by relating it to known Wi-Fi hotspots.
Undercover 3 works on Mac OS X 10.4 or later and costs $49. Other security software vendors that also license Skyhook’s technology include Intel and Ericsson, Awareness Technologies, and MacTrak.
