Freightliner Trucks, a subsidiary of Daimler, has announced the availability of its RunSmart Predictive Cruise system. Using GPS and 3D map data from NAVTEQ, RunSmart looks up to one mile ahead of a truck’s current location and taking into account road grades, adjusts the cruise control speed for the most fuel-efficient performance.
The NAVTEQ-supplied slope data covers 200, 000 miles of the most-often travelled truck routes in the United States, and by keeping the adjusted speed within 6 percent of the set speed, RunSmart Predictive Cruise ensures trucks maintain schedules while saving money and environmental damage over time. Initially the system will be available as an option for the Detroit Diesel DD15-equipped Freightliner Cascadia with a 72-inch raised roof.
