GPS software company Sygic is rumored to by unveiling a turn-by-turn GPS application for the iPhone at the Mobile World Congress.
I know, this was supposed to happen a long time ago. At one time TomTom was all ready to roll out an application supplying voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions for the iPhone, and then well, it didn’t happen.
I’ve sent an email to Sygic to confirm but if not, enter xGPS, an application that uses Google Maps to provide turn-by-turn directions, prompted along by a voice engine so you don’t have to continually stare at your phone. If you anticipate losing your data connection somewhere along your route, you can download map routes ahead of time. Interestingly, the application supports a bunch of external GPS units too, so even first-generation iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s without embedded GPS can use it. The only requirement to get is up and running is a jailbroken iPhone-hence the kinda, sorta…
xGPS isn’t available quite yet, but it will be in v1.2 soon in Cydia, as early as February 20. If you want to give it a try without the voice guidance, you can find the original version in the Cydia repositories.
