Massive layoffs coming to Motorola’s handset division as early as this week, will focus exclusively on Android handsets

motorola logo Massive layoffs coming to Motorolas handset division as early as this week, will focus exclusively on Android handsetsMotorola’s handset division may be facing massive layoffs as early as this week, reports Phone Scoop citing a source “familiar with Motorola’s plans”.  The source stated that layoffs could amount to 50 percent of the company’s handset division.  This sounds on the high side to me, but the company did state in October that it would be consolidating its operating system focus with an emphasis on Google’s Android.  The last I had heard, Motorola would be using Windows Mobile for business-oriented phones, P2K for low-end phones, and Android for everything else.  With 3 operating systems to focus on, laying off 50 percent of the handset division would be unlikely, but the source says Motorola will now only release 12 handsets per year, all using the Android OS.  If the rumor is true, 50 percent could be a reasonable number.
